'I was able to put my wedding ring on': New surgery reduces breast cancer survivor's arm lymphedema

In this video, breast cancer survivor Pam Schaffart shares how she was finally able to wear our Lymphatic Diamond Ring after suffering from extreme swelling caused by lymphedema for over a decade. When there is a problem with the lymphatic system, it can sometimes cause the lymph fluid to back up, which can cause swelling. This is called lymphedema. In Pam's case, the lymphedema occurred after she had some of her lymph nodes removed as part of her breast cancer treatment.

Plastic surgeon Sean Figy reconstructed Pam's lymphatic vessels using part of her tissue and its blood vessels and nerves in a procedure called lymphatic bypass. This procedure prevents or reduces lymphedema.Dr. Figy specializes in microscopic plastic surgery and complex reconstruction cases, such as Pam's, and it was his expertise that helped her get her life back.

Nebraska Medical Center is the only health system in the region that performs this procedure.
